I'd like to add a little to Clayton's post:
I was at another practice event this past Saturday in LA.
And consistent w/ the event at Qualcomm stadium in San Diego,
the fastest street cars are Vettes/Camaros and 3rd gen RX-7s.
This past Sat, the best lap times for them were about
65sec (matched by an MR2 Turbo, it was quite interesting
to see him spray water on the intercooler after every lap,
likewise, icepacks on the airbox and throttle body on the
3rd gen RX-7s). I rode shotgun a couple of laps w/ Randy Walters,
DSP champion the past 4-5 years straight, on his 85 GTI 8v and
he was turning 67sec lap times. Also turning 65s was a well
driven/prepared CRX si. I didn't see any VR6s at either
events.
As for me (as if you care :-), I was getting better and better
after each lap, from 81sec in the
first lap to 76sec on the 11th lap. I feel like I can easily
squeeze another sec or two by reducing my mistakes. At least
I'm only a couple of secs behind most Miatas and about
even w/ a 2nd gen RX-7 turbo on race tires. But to go any
further, I need really stiff springs/shocks, bigger sway
bars and of course race tires. There's just too much body
roll w/ Bilstein Sports/Eibach Sportlines and stock sway bars.
Randy was able to go flat out thru several turns at different
places whereas I/my car simply cannot.

Unfortunately, there are some Camaros that do very, very, very well
against the GTi VR6 cars, even in autocross. Just ask one of
the listers from the GTi VR6 list. Some Camaros are very serious
autocross machines. Also, at the BMW ACA lapping days that I go
to, there are a few Corvettes that show up. They are so fast that not a
single German car could get thru the test slalom course as
fast as one LT-1 car... They may rattle a lot and blow out power steering
systems on a regular basis but they do work very well.
The A2 16v does not stand a chance to those cars when both are driven by
good pilots! I'd still rather have a 16v GTi to one of
those any day.
