There's a tool to align the shifter?  Heh!  I've rebuilt a few on my various
VW's and have never had to use the tool.  Simply put the shifter in a
straight up position, and tighten the linkage from underneath.  It's worked
the first time every time.  You can verify the alignment by manipulating the
linkage from underneath the car.

A tool to do the job.  Whoda' thunk it!  ;-)
