If you can find an assistant, you don't need the alignment tool.  Use
a cassette tape as a spacer - slide it between the reverse "finger"
on the shifter and the reverse block on the shifter box.  Position
the shifter approx. vertical in the shifter box.  Tighten the shifter
clamp.

If you're too young to know what a cassette tape looks like, well,
that's a different problem <g>
