Dave,

The right tires are the key.  I have owned four 4WD vehicles
nd they certainly do have more traction, but a set of snows
all around and ABS make any FWD car a great snow vehicle.  We
got 9" of snow yesterday and last night.  My B5 Passat with
four Pirelli 190P snows works just fine.
