Hi
On most VWs the long bolt screws into an insert bushing that slides into
the A/C compressor ear (driver side ear) The bad news is that the flange
on the bushing is between the ear on the mount and the ear on the
compressor. If you remove the belt and lift the compressor it is relatively
easy to lift the compressor and knock out the bushing from the passengers
side with an even longer bolt or 5/16 rod and slip in a new one from the
drivers side of the compressor ear. It is a snug fit (at least in Southern
CA) (Luck may vary in saltier climes) All this assumes that the bushing is
damaged (kinda unlikely)

a new one from the dealership (only $1.85!), and tried putting it
in but something's blocking it. I have a feeling part of the old one
sheared off and is stuck way inside there.
Is there anything I can do to get it out? Do I just need to replace
the whole bracket? I'd rather not go to that much trouble if
there's an easier solution. >>
I have the exact same thing. Unfortunately, I haven't done a damn thing to
fix it in 2 years. Other than a little noise and of course being unable to
use the a/c, it's been NO problem...yet! I did, however, go to the junkyard
and get another alt/a/c/water pump/whatever--bracket in case something does
happen or I finally decide to fix the damn thing. The only other alternative
(due to the angle) is to go from shop to shop to find someone willing to
extract or tap a new hole or try it yourself. That has always been such a
pain in the arse for me that I much prefer unbolting all that mess and
popping a new bracket on...I believe all those brackets are the same for 8
and 16v cars but I am not sure...anybody?????????
Good luck,
Philip
