Oops!!  You are quite correct, Akira.  I got so into the technical
explanation, I lost my train of thought...
Yes, a dry sump system does allow the engine (and usually the transmission)
to be dropped quite a bit lower in the chassis.  I would guess that most OEM
oil pans are at least 6-8" deep (the seven quart pan on my Blazer must be
damn near a foot deep :-)).

Now, if I could just find my memory pills...
