I broke a timing belt at (gulp) over 5000 RPM in 4th gear and wound up
snapping the heads off a couple of valves (as well as bending all the
rest).  They scored the cylinder walls pretty badly, and the bottom end
wound up being replaced. :(  I didn't actually SEE the cylinder walls first
hand, as I was 500 miles from home and the one VW dealership in the upper
peninsula of michigan had the car.  I assume they weren't lying, though.
