Can someone tell me why every 16V car I buy throws the timing belt right
after I buy it? Anyone? Damnit, damnit, damnit. So anyway, I'm on 95 South
in the middle of a blazing snow storm, on my way to Richmond to see the GF
for Valentine's day(damn this holiday), and about halfway there, I hear BANG,
and the oil and battery lights come on. The car is off and I am coasting to
a stop on the shoulder. OK, I was just doing 80 in 5th, so that comes out to
4K on the rev counter. So I try to start the car....and it spins over way
too fast to be good. So I go out and push on the belt....and it's loose.
Fuck. From this point, it becomes a 2 and a half hour battle with AAA to get
me a tow truck while I sit on the side of the highway with NO HEAT. I will
not bore you with the details, but let me tell you, AAA has not heard the
last from me about this. Anyway, I need opinions....what's the probablilty
that I trashed the pistons, too? I know the head is gone, and that's not
really all that important to me, I have 3 sources for 1.8L heads. But if I
am going to need a bottom end, too, I am going to have to go shopping. I'll
be pulling the head off tomorrow, but I'd like to have some sort of idea of
what to expect here.
