I dunno. I read a review of the X5 somewhere (roundel or CAR, perhaps?)
saying that it would lap nurburgring about as fast as the automatic
transmissioned 540i. True, if I were buying a BMW it'd be the 540i with
the six-speed, but lets not go slamming the X5 TOO badly. It's compentent
as a car and amazing for an SUV. Hats off to BMW for examining the market
and putting out a product that is everything that 95% of the SUV owners
want. Car buying ISN'T about making rational decisions. If it were, we'd
all be driving around in diesel rabbits. Wanting a feeling of security and
a comanding view of the road is no less valid a reason for buying a car
than buying it because the engine sounds good at 7000 RPM. Besides, try
towing a boat with your 5-series sedan. :) My big complaint about SUVs is
their (dangerous) weight. If they were making SUVs under 3500lbs, I'd have
absolutely nothing against them.
