You might want to try buying a "Remote Starter Switch" at practically any
auto parts place, or just use a screwdriver to short across to put 12V to
the starter solenoid terminal on your car. It is even possible that the
wire is simply loose or corroded... You should be able to go from the
"hot" thick lead to the starter, through the switch (or some convenient
tool), and over to the solenoid terminal. Press the remote switch (car NOT
in gear!) and see if it cranks. Have the key on, and it should actually
start. If nothing happens, bad solenoid or starter. Solenoids will
usually at least click if functional, which will narrrow it down. I've
know someone to drive for over a month with a borrowed remote switch (mine,
dammit!) instead of fixing his ignition switch; he stopped when the wires
got tangled in the fan and destroyed the remote unit.

> For about a month and a half now, I haven't been able to start my 89 GTI
and I suspect a bad ignition switch. I would like to try to fix it myself
but it's been too cold in NYC for me to do it and I don't want to bring it
to a shop.

to put a temporary switch so I can start it and warm it up without having
to push start it.

everything else is fine.
