Ok guys, I have some plans for the near future to transplant a 2L into
my current Jetta GTX 1.8L GTX.
I plan on rebuilding the entire motor myself (I've never done this
before but I'm ready for the challenge).
What should be done/changed to achieve maximum performance? Balanced,forged
pistons,Crower rods,ETC etc : You said max, right?
What can be done along a more reasonable budget?
Buy the VW Watercooled handbook.
Head:
How much can the head be ported?
Do not port it yourself, unless you have experience porting VW heads.
Should I sitck with a ported and polished 2L head or 1.8L head?
What's a 3 angle valve job and is it worth it?
I think it means that they cut around the valve seats at 3 different angles?
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Yes it's worth it.
What valves and valve springs should I go for? Techtonics?
Stock valves, either Techtonics or Shrick valve springs. Techtonics titanium
retainers. You really only need these(springs and retainers) if you are
using cams bigger than, say, 260's.
How much should the head be shaved for a daily driver running Sunocco
Ultra 94? I wouldn't go over 11:1 or maybe 11.5:1 , talk to Jeff at
Velocity, 310 952 0003.
I doubt I'm gonna get cams, but I'd probably get an intake cam.
If you are doing all that engine work, go with something bigger than an
intake. interested in Shrick 256's?
Block:
I hear all this talk about balancing and blueprinting, what exactly has
to be balanced and why? Is it worth the cost?
The crank,rods,pistons and wrist-pins. To rotate smoother at high rpms and
allow higher rpms. It cost me an extra $100, balanced to within 1g. To me,
it's worth it just for the peice of mind, and my car does rev a little more
freely above 6K or so.
Should any of the engine's bearings be changed?
YES- All of them!!
Any prefernec on Piston Rings?
Federal Mogul or Total Seal.
I know that techtonics sells a lot of the parts I mention. How does
their quality/prices match up to other suppliers? Quality is great, dont
know about their prices though.
