You guys might have remembered that I was removing my tranny last week. I
ended up removing the engine, which wasn't really that difficult. I'm
glad I did it actually. It's been raining in Illinois all week. I rolled
the engine into the garage to work on it (to much crap in there for a
car). Now that my engine was out I decided to do a bunch of stuff. First
I removed the ac. I relocated the alternator to where the ac compressor
was. I plan on getting an 8v alternator so I can ditch the iron bracket
completely. If the 16v alternator guts can fit inside the 8v alternator
shell, I swap them. I'm not to worried about the power differences in the
altenators though. I don't even have a radio in my car. I stripped out
the radio and all the wiring months ago. I also installed a new water
pump/bracket, with a low temp thermostat. Since my radiator was out, I
finally put in a low temp fan switch as well. Finally, I'm installing a
manual steering rack and ditching the power steering. Now I only have
three pulleys on my engine, and one belt. The crank, waterpump, and
alternator pulley. It's nice. Maybe even equal to a set of unorthodox
pulleys as far as engine strain etc.

Also, I parted out my daily driver (1988 GLI, same as the project car) to
use as parts for my project car. I sold the 'shell' for $200 to a vw
mechanic. He didn't want the engine. I asked how much to remove the
tranny for me. He said it would be about three hours labor which came out
to $165. So I offered him the engine if he removed the tranny for me.
That's fine since I didn't have the time or the room for pulling the
engine anyway. Here's what I took off the car before I sold it.

Recaro Interior (1990 up style)
dashboard
headliner
boge shocks/ neuspeed softsports
newer rear calipers
autotech ss brakelines
Hella 16v lights/radiator support
taillights

The car had a lot of rust, so I didn't think I could sell it for much. I
got what I wanted out of the car, so I am happy. The only thing is that I
have two cars worth of parts sitting around everywhere. The biggest
slowdown in this project has been waiting for parts to arrive. That and
not knowing how to do a few things, and having to wait to find out.
Anyway, I thought I'd share my week. Hopefully, I'll be done soon. My
brother Dave took some pics of my engine out, and some other stuff. I'll
probably put them online when we get 'em developed.
