RE: Rear wiper not working. Its not real expensive but a PIA to fix, but ensure its not the wiring from rear of car to hatch that's at fault. Bro's 89 GTi fried headlight switch with a break in the wiring, but it was fine in "open" position. Either use voltmeter or run some wire back there with +12V and gnd to diagnose.
RE: Front wiper splines gone Even at dealer, its not expensive fix. You do not have to replace the motor or linkage. VW made the splines softer than the linkage.
