I know the wiring is good to the rear as I diagnosed the 3 brake light (real
jerry rigged from the factory to run off the passenger side brake light) and
also I some times get the rear wiper to come on by pulling for the front
washer. That is, the rear wiper will cycle as if the rear washer was
engaged.

I am fairly positive it is in the switch. Upon initial inspection of the
switch, it is a MYRIAD of connections and I just have not taken the time to
test all of them and learn which does what.

Has anyone else encountered this????

Brice

RE: Rear wiper not working.

Its not real expensive but a PIA to fix, but ensure its not the wiring from
rear of car to hatch that's at fault. Bro's 89 GTi fried headlight switch
with a break in the wiring, but it was fine in "open" position. Either use
voltmeter or run some wire back there with +12V and gnd to diagnose.

RE: Front wiper splines gone

Even at dealer, its not expensive fix. You do not have to replace the motor
or linkage. VW made the splines softer than the linkage.
