I'm a bit confused by your description - have you already removed the
steering wheel and confirmed that the adapter won't fit?  If so, then
get the correct adapter - period.  IIRC, all A1 and A2 cars use the
same diameter steering column.  

When removing the steering wheel, remove the 24mm nut and gently rock
the steering wheel from the column - no puller needed in most cases. 
The biggest trick to installing the new wheel is getting it on
straight and getting the wave washer and nut started on the column -
it helps to have long skinny fingers, I'm saddled with pudgy
ham-hocks.
