Gents,
Ok, for those of u that have been following my saga of resent w/my
'90 2.0l Motronic will remember that i confidently declared my problems
where caused by a faulty Hall sender. Well, I'm retracting that
statement. Let's start over. Here's what happens--
In the morning when the engine is cold and the car has been sitting
overnight the car will start on the first try and idle fine. The engine
will rev freely. The car has full power and is driveable. I start on
my way to work. W/in the first 5 minutes of my trip the car will start
to loose power. It doesn't just die instantly, it's a slow death.
After I get the car off the road (the person who's driveway I stop in
every morning must think I drive a real shit box), if I attempt to
restart the car it will turn over, catch (u know how the 16V rev a bit
when started, then settle back down to idle), idle properly for 2-4
seconds, and then die. It will do this repeatedly. If I have the
patients to go thru this for long enough, like 20-30 minutes, it will
eventually start and run fine.
To speed up the starting process, I unplug the electrical connector
to the DPR. The car starts and idles fine. It is driveable, but like
shit. I know why, b/c the computer is in default mode. I drive the car
in this manner long enough for the engine to warm up (10-12 minutes).
Then I stop, turn off the car, plug the connector for the DPR back in,
and the car starts fine and runs fine. This lasts for the rest of the
day!! I have yet to experience this problem again during the day after
I do this AM ritual.
So, what's gone bad? I believe it's something that responds to
engine temp, like the thermo switch. Could it be bad and flooding the
engine when it cold and then operates normally when the engine is warm?
A mechanic buddy of mind said there is a coil of some sort in the DPR
itself that could be affected by engine temp. Could that be bad??
I haven't had a chance to do the electrical tests in the bentley on
the thermo switch or the DPR. I will. Any other tests I should try?
How hard is it to swap out the DPR w/a known working one to test that??
Do I have to use a DPR from a Motronic car or can I use any CIS-E DPR??
Anyone in Western NY have one I can "borrow" for a couple days??
I'm close guys, I just need some ideas. Or someone to say that my
theories are totally wrong. Any help is appreciated.
TIA,
--
