I don't think I was getting any pinging. My car is so damn noisy though,
I probably wouldn't notice it anyway. Fixing the timing belt made a world
of difference. I highly suggest that you check yours. If it is your belt,
it isn't difficult to fix at all. The only thing you need to remove is
the upper timing belt cover. Just set the little mark on the crank pulley
in line with the arrow on the lower timing belt cover. Use a 19mm socket
to turn the engine. Once the mark is lined up, check to see if the mark
on the cam sprocket is inline with the mark on the valve cover. When my
cam sprocket was lined up, the crank pulley was about .5" off mark. To
fix it, make sure the crank pulley is lined up. Then loosen the tensionor
and slip off the belt. Then turn the cam sprocket with a wrench until the
mark is lined up. (FYI, when the cam sprocket is lined up with the mark
on the valve cover, you can crank the engine over by hand and nothing
will hit. All the intake valves are closed). Then slip the belt back on.
Make sure that there is good tension on the part of the belt facing the
front of the car. You want the belt loose on the other side, because it
can be tightened with the tensionor. I noticed when I tightened the
tensionor back up, the crank pulley had a tendancy to move. I ended up
having my dad hold the crank pulley still with the wrench while I
tightened the tensionor. I believe you want it tight enough so you can
twist the belt 45 degrees.
