Last week I picked up a clean '84 Gti dirt cheap knowing that it had
some transmission issues. At first I though it was well on the way to
self machining, but after poking around a bit, I'm beginning to think
otherwise. Here's what it's doing:

Car starts up and idles fine. With the clutch fully disengaged it makes
a hollow rattling noise coming from the transmission. Using a long
screwdriver to take a listen, it appears as if it's coming from the end
cap. When the clutch is engaged, the noise goes away. Now, when the
car is placed in any gear, and I ease my foot off the clutch, there is a
horrible almost gear whining noise, but I don't think it's the gears,
it's a slightly different noise. This is only present when accelerating
or cruising at a steady speed. If I coast in gear, the noise is
nonexistent.

I'm thinking clutch release bearing, possibly clutch push rod. Any
opinions? I'm going to pull the end cap this weekend, but who the hell
designed the A1? I have to drop three of four motor mounts to get
enough clearance to pull the end cap past the wheel well. Maybe I'll
just use a grinder to "redesign" the wheel well area. Thanks.
