>From your description, it sounds like a throw-out bearing (or in VW
terminology, a clutch release bearing).  

Try removing the front motor mount and lowering the engine/trans with
a floor jack - that should provide you with sufficient room to remove
the end cap.  Just be sure to have the correct sealer for the end cap
when you replace it - it's not pretty when an end cap pops off and
dumps gear oil all over the brakes (BTDT).
