Repeat after me: "I will not put "gear oil" in my VW transaxle. I will put
Redline MTL in my VW transaxle." Catchy, huh?

Most "gear oils" will be 80W90 or 75W90 and they will have an EP (extreme
pressure) additive level of GL-5. VW manual transaxles need GL-4, which is
only half the additive concentration. More is definitely not better as EP
additives will attack the synchros and bearings. GL-5 and GL-6 were
developed for the hypoid gears found in every rear wheel drive diff because
of the high sliding loads between the gear teeth.

MTL has a slightly lower viscosity to make shifting easier and faster, the
right additive concentration and the right friction modifiers so your
synchros can engage as God intended.
Use MTL, you will never regret it.

I've only used 2 quarts even and have not blown my tranny yet. As far as
the drain plug, it is the 17mm (I think) hex wrench and it is on the bottom
of the trans and on the side- you have to take off the driver's side front
wheel.

It is a hard bolt to miss...

  Subject: Tranny Drain plug?

Where is the drain plug located? the bently seems to make absolutly no
referance to it, only the plug to fill the tranny up.

Is this the one right under the final drive, on the bottom and back of the
tranny?
and then to fill the tranny back up i use the hole on the side, and just
fill it till it oozes out ('90 car so i dont need to use the speedo hole
right?).
and finaly do i need 2 quarts exactly of gear oil? or is it a tiny bit
over 2 quarts? i dont really want to buy 3 quarts of this stuff if i'm not
going to be using alot of the 3'rd quart.

  thanks.
