It could be the first gear synchronizer or the hub. Low tranny fluid level
would definitely do it too, check that first. I never have to shift into
second to get to first. Sometimes I have a little trouble getting into first
while slowing down, but that's just because of how fast the gear is
spinning, that's normal.
