Steve,
   My car doesn't have the power windows so I don't
have the area that you mention.  Where ever you mount
the gauges first be certain that you have adequate
depth.  As a general rule it is not a good idea to
drill through the heater core and stuff like that; it
gets messy!  I have not seen an analog gauge with a
remote sensor for current though I'm sure that the
digital gauges that the car stereo guys use could work
although I doubt it would have an appropriate look.
   I think Potterman is www.parts4vws.com.  Others
will  quickly correct me if I'm wrong.
   I think the VDO gauges are the best bet for
quality, availabilty and price although you could look
at Autometer or maybe Smith gauges.
   Well have fun, I'm off on a cross country adventure
next week.  Commercial to LAX and the a Beechcraft
Baron (twin engine) back through Calexico (CA),
Texarkana, Baton Rouge and then Boston (I sit in the
right seat, sigh).
