Well - if you build the motor right, you might be able to see 8500
rpms.  However, in IT, it just ain't happening with stock valve
springs and cams.  FYI, my buddy has routinely turned upwards of 9000
rpms on his MB motor!!

However, Mark's right (I can't believe I'm saying this - I must be
tired).  In relatively stock configuration, the 16v motors don't make
much power over about 6500 rpms - in fact, I set my shift lite at
that rpm b/c that's about where the torque begins to fade.  Revving
the motor any higher merely stresses the components.  I only redline
the car when I MUST - like having to drag race someone into a turn. 
BTW, I still have my stock 7200 rpm rev limter which keeps me from
lunching motors.
