If your cat was glowing red, that is a problem. Have you checked your
mixture lately? I think (and don't quote me on this - Alex is the one to
ask) that if the mixture is too rich then you are more likely to melt the
cat. But it might be the other way around. In any case check the mixture
and it may solve some of your problems.

my vw finally left me stranded. alternator went bad and quickly died.
luckily only 19 miles from home. last night at about 8:15 on my way home.
luckily it happened right next to some rednecks house, and they even had a
phone! no long distance but 1-800-collect. i've maybe put 300 miles on this
car since i bought it back and nothing but problems. i've had this car for
nearly 4 months, you'd think all the problems would have been fixed by
now... heater core, water pump, spark plugs, plug wires, dist. cap, rotor,
tranny, clutch, fuel filter, cat. was glowing red 3 weeks ago so i cleaned
it out to find out that 80% of the insides were melted. next on the list
alternator, battery, transfer pump i think, have sitting 1.8 16v head, 50mm
intake manifold, still trying to decide which cam(s) i want to go with(euro
intake, shrick 260/276).
