Jeeez... I remember hearing about this problem, but I can't remember what the solution was.
I would try the *reset* trick, by disconnecting the battery for 10 or so minutes. I can't remember what the exact sequence was, but that always seemed to fix stupid electrical problems that the A3's had. BTW... there was someone on VWVortex.com that is going through the same problem, except his randomly started working again for a while...
