I did the alternator into the AC position mod. I don't quite remember who
told me how to do it here, but it basically is:
1. Take the AC compressor out
2. Dremel out the drivers side of the bracket where the AC mounted so the
alternator will fit.
3. Go to the local hardware store and buy a adjustable turnbuckle with
rings.
4. Bolt the alternator in where the AC was, and connect the turnbuckle to
the head and the AC.
5. Use the same belt that is already there and turn the turnbuckle untill
the belt is tight.

Simple, effective, 1 hour at the most and $3.75 in parts.

There are pictures of this somewhere. Search the archives and you will find
them.

Subject: engine pulley question

Hi,

    I have a pulley question. I currently have a 1.8L 8v "RD" engine
without AC and without power steering in my jetta. I bought a 2.0L 16v
"6k" engine for next spring. That engine had AC and power steering. I will
keep the power steering but not the AC. The pulley set up won't work
anymore because the alternator use to be driven by the AC compressor. Maybe
I could use the pulleys from my 1.8L and use a longer strap so it would also
drive the power steering pump aswell. That's if they all align, haven't
checked that yet. Anyone had the same problem that could give me some
hints. Thanks
