Idea: Maybe market a lightweight titanium bolt set for VWs....:)

(That was a fad several years back on bicycles as weight reduction became
popular. )

The quality and extra expense of fasteners would be justified on a
spacecraft where failure could mean the end of someone's life. $8 a bolt is
cheap from that perspective.

interesting factiod on allen bolts...the ONLY type of fastners we use on
our spacecraft are allen heads. most of the stuff is size 4, 6, or 8
though (rarely, if ever, is there a 1/4" fastener) and you're really
cranking down on the screws when you get above 20 in-lbs. ...so i guess
thats not a straight comparison. still interesting though. i think as
you get smaller, its easier to torque down an allen than it is a hex.

the screws also almost all titanium (stainless steel is the cheap stuff)
and as a comparison, the 1/2" 6-32 screw you would buy at the hardware
store for 12 cents cost 8-10 bucks in titanium flavor.

i had a bag full of 800 screws last week...
