I had the wire from the coil to the distributor go bad so gradually that I
really didn't know how bad of shape it was really in. Sometimes the car
would take a lot of cranking to start and I couldn't figure out why. I
did the resistance checks on all the wires and didn't see anything wrong.
One day I couldn't start the car at all. I replaced the coil because the
spark I saw on the plug was orange instead of blue. The coil didn't help.
Then I replced the coil -> distributor wire and the spark was brigh blue
again. The car had so much more power than before it was amazing I drove
it for so long in that bad of shape. Anyway, that was in my 88 16v
Scirocco many, many years ago. So you may want to check your wires before
suspecting the coil. Was the car running recently?
