Chad,

Dryer bottles are relatively inexpensive - $28 for my 16v Scirocco so
I'd recommend that you replace it instead of fix it.  When you
replace the dryer, replace the O-rings on those fittings as well. 
It's a fairly easy item to change - then you have to evacuate and
refill the system which is a whole other PITA unto itself.  

IIRC, my BMW has 2 fail-safes - the plug on the dryer and another
over-pressure device on the compressor which I don't think is
sacrificial (like the plug).  Given the cost differential, you'd be
much happier replacing a $50 dryer bottle than an $XXX compressor
should something else fail.
