Never had the ATE Power Stops on the '92, but I've had a set of other
slotted rotors, and now have Zimmerman cross drilled rotors. I had PBR
MetalMaster pads with the slotted rotors, and they worked very well (11"
brakes on an A2 are AWESOME with any pad/rotor combo). When I went to the
Zimmerman cross drilled, I had an opportunity to pick up a set of Brembo
Serie Oro pads, which were impossible to get in the U.S., unless you knew
someone with connections in the UK or Europe (there's someplace I found
online that now has Brembo pads, but I've been unable to find the website
again, I'll keep looking), and this setup is unbelievable! These pads are
by far the best I've ever used. They have incredible grip from the first
cold stop in the morning to the last 85 - 20 mph late brake at the bottom of
my local mountain race course, er, road. I'm not sure how much is the cross
drilled rotors, but I do notice that wet braking is more consistent than it
was with the slotted rotors.
Bottom line: There's no comparison between the 9.4" front brakes that came
on '91-'92 GTI 16V's and the 11" upgraded fronts, no matter what pad/rotor
combo you choose...
