Thats the exact example I was looking for. My car is doing this too. I
will have to look into this. See your guide is helpful already!

Subject: [A2-16v] Weird VW problems - a compilation. Please read.
Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 13:30:42 EDT
A project I've had in mind for a long time now is to make a troubleshooting
guide for the weird problems VW's tend to have. If everyone could email me
with one or more stories of strange problems and how you fixed them, I'll
put
them all together and put it up on my website.
I figure it'd be a great tool to have for all watercooled VW guys and gals.
Here's my latest example:
91 GTI 16V - The car will randomly not start. Very much like a bad
ignition
switch, you turn the key and nothing, not even a crank. It'd been doing
this
for over a year now and I replaced the ignition switch a second time, and
it
still didn't fix it. I thought it was a hot start problem, but it wasn't.
It was a faulty seat belt/starter interlock relay. Yup, that gizmo that
keeps your car from starting when you don't have your seat belt plugged in.
The little contact point inside of it was a little burnt up and didn't make
good contact. I simpy bypassed it. It's useless to me anyways, since I
always wear my seat belt.
Alex.
