So I'm changing the trans fluid in my daughter's 84 Rabbit and decide to check the gear oil. I pull the fill plug (there is no drain plug on TK type 010 trannies) and ATF comes pouring out! Oh no. Good indication that one of the seals is shot and allowing ATF into the final drive housing. Removed ATF and pumped an entire liter of gear oil into it. I can now hear the final drive gears in their true state of wear and tear. Slight whining sound but definately there and will probably increase with time.
Questions: Is it possible to repair this without dismatling the trans? I would think that replacing the torque converter shaft seal should fix the problem. Also, with the ring gear probably on it's way to dying - can the final drive gears be changed with out a complete trans rebuild? Lastly - are all 010 auto trannies the same? I know gear ratios are probably different. If I have to find a used or rebuild, do all A1 and A2 trannies bolt up? 010 experts p-mail me please. Rich Blake
