I don't trust pots either... There used to be a nice design on angband.org, but the page has been taken down. Here's a link to a snapshot at archive.org. Unfortunately, archive.org doesn't archive images, hence no circuit diagram:

The switches allow you to set an exact resistance from among 16 possible values. I thought it was a better idea than having a pot.
