Guess it wasn't the in tank pump that was going bad. I replaced it just a few days ago. I was coming back from my vacation today on i-75 going north and the pump quit on me right as I exited at Punta Gorda for a little food. The car ran fine for 5 - 6 hours straight, then the engine started missing trying to hold the cruise control at 80 going slightly uphill. Then I moved it down to 75mph and it missed/hesitated a little less. Finally I disabled the cruise and let the car go uphill without trying to maintain the same speed... worked fine until I came to a stop sign. It won't idle, but will run with some constant missing.
So now I am 100 miles away from home (Tampa) and need to get a replacement main fuel pump installed. I may have to break down and go to the dealer, damn. Anyone near Fort Meyers Punta Gorda Florida where I can leave my car for a week... safely :) There is a vw stealer about 10 miles away, but I am not that desperate yet. Later.
