Just a comment or three:
Don't know that I've seen it in writing that "normal" numbers are higher
for 16v engines, but keep in mind that the 8v engines measure WATER temp,
while the 16v shows us OIL temperatures. Yes, there's a heat exchanger
between them, but the oil temperatures are clearly higher on the oil than
water for these engines. I had half a dozen 8v cars, and all ran lower
numbers than my three 16v cars w/o exception.
That makes me wonder about the setup that Rick Dathan has: Rick, are you
reading & showing water temps on your car? I'm assuming from the
description that yours is a purpose-built racing or autocrossing vehicle and
not a factory setup at all. Further, saying that it has hit 212 F and
attributing it to air pockets or bubbles says that you're speaking of
coolant instead of oil. At least, I HOPE you don't have bubbles in the oil!
At least here in the states, the MFA shows the little universal icon (an
oil lamp sort of thing) adjacent the display for temperature, and the
owner's glovebox manual clearly says that it's showing us OIL temperature.
The water temperature is shown by the "regular" guage, but it has no
calibrations, just a white band for "too cold", and the fully warmed-up
normal reading seems to be at the low temp side of the centered LED that
comes on to indicate overheating (varies in location between early cars like
my '87s and later ones like my '89).
My 16v cars typically show anything between around 212 and 225 F for oil
temps in normal day-to-day driving. Outside temperatures around here range
between 90s in summer (stop & go traffic can really raise the numbers! I've
seen 240 more than a few times) and -20s in winter (call it about +35 C down
to about -28 C, roughly). This is the warm corner of Wisconsin...

- 8V motors run a lot cooler. My 8V cars never got above 220. But from all
the 16V's I've owned/driven/worked on, 210-230 is normal operating
temperature. The hottest they get on the street is about 260, and on the
track 290. I believe the operating manual states that 290+ is considered
overheating.
