I grounded one plug on the intake and cranked the engine over. There is spark, but it's orange. The Bentley states that it should be blue, and that orange spark indicates a problem in the ignition system. The Bentley also says that if you get any spark, the HallSender is functioning. I pulled the distributor cap and cleaned the contacts, but they weren't bad. The plug wires are relatively new. Checked the connections of all plug wires and the coil wire. They looked okay, and no cracking that I can see. I'm now trying to test the coil. The picture of the coil in the Bentley doesn't look exactly like mine, though. I'm trying to figure out which connectors to measure primary resistance across. I guess the black wire goes to the negative and the green (which are up against the firewall) are positive? I might try and remove the coil, but it doesn't look fun to get to. Do McParts stores have the capability to test ign coils? Laters, Brian 89 GLI Wolfsburg Ed.
