There is no snow here in Southern California but the driving mentality on
this side of the country seems to suffer the same fate. I've driven the San
Francisco to Los Angeles route twice in the past three weeks. I find that
the majority of automobiles average around 70-75 mph on the uninterrupted
and straight 5 Freeway. Traveling at this velocity, my Jetta is in the
middle with equal number of cars being passed as cars that pass me. However,
there are very few "CARS" that pass me at that speed. An occasional BMW or
Porsche. The vast majority of vehicles above this average velocity are SUVs,
Pickups, and Minivans. I was passed by a Ford Econoline doing well into the
triple digits. There are minivans packed full of kids flashing to pass or
pickup trucks with loose luggage in the back flying by as if I were standing
still.

I doubt any of these vehicles are equipped with speed rated tires. Most
wearing light truck R rated which is safe up to 85 mph. Of course, when they
blow up due to excessive speed it is the tire and auto manufacturers fault.
