Well, since the newest 16v car was built over 11 years ago, I hardly see how this is a defective part.
Guys, cars are mechanical things. That means that any and all parts in them will age and where out. That also means the heater core. I bought my '91 GTI 16v new. VW recalled ALL the heater cores at that time and replaced them. The fact that your heater core "only" lasted 12-15 years does NOT make it defective!
