I agree!  But there is a recall for it, so we should take advantage of it.  If 
volkswagen (as a company) was smart, they would have redesigned the heater core 
so that they would last longer (instead of putting the same part in).  I feel 
it should be a part that last the life of the car (i.e. at least 15 yrs).  

If they are indeed replacing the heater cores with the same crap (same part 
number) that came with the car, I'd say fight for it and get them to replace it 
for free, before you get a nice splash of prestone on your leg.

The heater core in my mom's old 850t wagon went out.  The car was a '95 and 
she got rid of it a year ago so therefore this happened maybe 2 years ago.  
No recall on that heater core.  Parts fail simple as that.

And I belive that they do replace the heater core with the exact same brand 
and style unit, they just take care of the labor for you so you don't have 
to.
