I did mine on my GTI a few months ago, and it was a rust belt car. It wasn't too bad. I sprayed the fittings with some penetrating oil a couple times a while before I got to work to loosen things up a bit, but I think I also may have used my breaker bar to get enough leverage to free the bolts. I didn't do anything with the fuel pump relay. I would recommend putting locking pliers on the fuel lines and have a jar handy to catch the run-off.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Fuel Filter Tips

Anyone have tips for not getting soaked w/gas when attempting to
replace a
fuel filter? I thought I remember a long time ago someone posting on this
list that if you pulled the fuel pump relay while the car was running, that
would cut down on the amount of gas to would soak you. True?

        Any tips appreciated,

        Renard
