I made a "special" tool from a dinner fork. I removed the center tine with a Dremel tool. You're left with a slot wide enough that it fits around the post of the plugs. Just slide the fork under the head of the fastener, and gently pry upwards. The curve in the fork allows you to pop out the fasteners easily.

on how to remove these easily?

Also do any of you all have suggestions on how to install my new
headliner? They are so fragile. I have already reinforced parts
of the backer with a heavy packing tape.

Why not paint them with some matt black spray paint.
That should solve the problem.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Black Headliner

Hi all,

I pick up a black headliner last fall to replace the sagging gray
one in my 91 jetta. I need to get the plugs that hold up the
center and the sunroof crank that I am also missing. What years
did the jetta come with a black headliner.

Thanks,
Jesse
