I've had good luck with rebuilt half shafts from AAB.  Used a rebuilt 
unit
from them on each side of the girlfriend's Saab and no issues.  I would
recommend going with a rebuilt unit of some sort, whether NAPA or AAB.  A
lot less hassle and, I believe, if you are good, you can squeeze it off w/o
removing the wheel, even.  I say this b/c I just watched a friend remove the
driver's side axle on a B3 Passat with the wheel on.  I would assume it
would be similar on A2s, but have no direct experience.
