I have the exact same problem only that pressure on the key would not help. It
just would turn over whenever it felt like it.

I finally took off the connector that goes to the ignition switch. I cleaned
it out with contact cleaner really well and it now
turns over every time.

Try that. On my 91 GTI you just have to take off a couple of screws to remove
the cover and then you can get to that connector.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] starting issues

OK, my B3 Passat 16v is having a problem. It takes me about 2 minutes to start
the thing. I have to put the key in at an angle and
put pressure on it and move the steering wheel (tilt wheel)to start it. I have
to try about 10 times before it will start. When I
put the key in, the auto-belts go back, and when I turn it to the on position
all the idiot lights and the fuel pump turn on. But
when I turn it, it just wouldn't start right away. It doesn't even turn over.
When it does start, it starts up fine.

Would the key being slightly bent have anything to do with it?

Also, when I turn my headlights on, sometimes the dash lights don't come
on.....also the clock shuts off and restarts to 1:00 when I
turn the lights off. But if I tap the top of the dash, the lights come on and
so does the clock. Could this short in the dash
possibly have something to do with my starting issues?

Any input would be great. Thanks

Brian
