[a2-16v-list] E-brake cable

Help, I'm trying to change the e-brake cable on my daily driver, a 92 Jetta GL. 
I've got the right cable, double checked at the dealer. It seems to be several 
inches too long. It seems to me that I ran into this before on my son's 87 
Jetta, but can't remember what I did. Any ideas?
