Try this:
Check the front end of the cable. There is probably a gold colored tube on
the old cable you took out. It looks like it is part of the cable, but it is
part of the cable guide that stays on the car. Remove the tube, put it on
the front of the new cable, reinstall, length should be perfect. Happened to
me. Also, make sure it goes through all the cable holders under the car as
well.

Help, I'm trying to change the e-brake cable on my daily driver, a 92 Jetta
GL. I've got the right cable, double checked at the dealer. It seems to be
several inches too long. It seems to me that I ran into this before on my
son's 87 Jetta, but can't remember what I did. Any ideas?
