Folks,

The suggestion earlier about using Velcro is a valid one. When I worked for the U.S. Govt. and accepted an assignment to England, I used "industrial" Velcro (about an inch wide) to secure both the front and rear British number plates to the Jetta we took over with us. That was August of 92 when I put them on. Came back to the U.S. in early 97 and had a helluva time getting the plates as well as the other section of the Velcro off, both front and back. Any reputable hardware store will sell it to you by the foot, no need to buy the whole box.

Just make sure you clean all the "stuff" off of the bumper before you try to make it stick. Straight Chlorox does a nice job of removing any "bumper black" residue or wax that might be there left over, as do some of the stronger chemicals on the market. In order for it to stick and not fall off, the bumper must be absolutely clean before you apply the Velcro.........Jack

There is a proper lisence plate holder for the front bumper on small bumper and big bumper MK2s.

Here are the Part Numbers for the front plate holders
Small bumper PN: 176 807 997
Big Bumper PN: 191 813 995

I'm sure you'd be able to find one at a wrecker as well as the necessary screws.

Mark Reda.
