Brian,
My alternator went out a couple years ago (wouldn't charge). I had it rebuilt once at a private shop, and it went bad again after about a year. I then replaced it with a rebuilt Bosch unit from O'Reilly, which has a lifetime replacement warranty. Haven't had any problems since.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] new alternator
Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:02:04 -0600

So a few days ago I noticed a new noise at idle under the hood. I
thought it was my a/c compressor on its way out, but apparently, it was
the alternator.

I guess the bearings are seizing up, as the alt/batt light started
flickering, combined with squealing from the alt belt. I pulled it, and
it is now very difficult to turn.

It only has 105k miles on it, which seems low to me.

Laters,
Brian
