I did something similar. I got tired of putting more money into my wife's B3
and decided to get her a later model Jetta. I used the B3 as my donor for my
GTi and salvaged what parts I desired from it.

Sometimes you just have to move on. If it makes sense to you and your
pocketbook. Go get the newer car. Every used car will have it's challenges.
SO just expect to repair something regardless of what year.

The B5 cars are a more refined driving experience and they are still fun to
drive. The 1.8T is a totally different animal than the 16V engines which
we've grown so familier, but there is an extensive knowledgebase and
community of enthusiasts/aftermarket to support your journey with the new
platform.

The B5 platform has a lot more development, replacement parts, aftermarket
accessories, and upgrades than the B3.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Any B5 owners?

Apparently, I accidentally sent this to the old list address...let's try
it again.

I know this is a little bit off topic, but I wanted to ask you guys
before I braved the vortex.

I think the B3 needs a new clutch and I really don't feel like sinking
any more money into it. I saw a 98 Passat 1.8T with 80,000 for $7,500.
I haven't personally inspected it but from the pictures it looks to be
very clean, inside and out. It has a clean title and I know a girl that
works at the dealer so I have some trust with the dealer. There is a 1
year 12,000 mile warrantee on the car.

Do any of you have an experience with earlier B5 Passats? I have read
some mixed reviews on different websites, mainly complaints about the
electrical system and the turbo. Any common problems I should look out
for/check for? Is that too high of a price? Blue book says retail
should be around 10,000.

Any help would be great

Brian
