That sounds like a fair amount of oil to be burning. Do you know where the
oil is going? You may have already done this but check the engine crankcase
vent to intake setup to see if it is operating correctly. If it is not, it
can use some additional oil, but not usually this much. Maybe a compression
test as well, to see if it is the rings (although you said one piston had
the rings replaced).
If you have to make it another 33K miles at 1 quart per 1K miles, that is a
lot of oil to burn. You might think of switching to a little heavier grade
of oil, which should burn slightly less. I'm not a big fan of oil additives,
and don't think they would solve this problem. IMO, a synthetic blend will
still be a very good oil, better than a straight conventional oil, and
shouldn't cause any problems.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Oil Loss and Cost Replacement
Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 21:32:22 EST
I've been real good to my Gli with plenty of Mobil 1 and VW Oil Filters
since
I got the car in 1998. I recall losing about a quart (no external leaks)
every thousand miles or so. I recently had the rings replaced in one
cylinder and
a rebuilt head. I'm now losing a quart of oil more frequently. The
engine/car
has 167K miles on it and intend to take it to 200K. Based on the frequent
loss
and cost of a case of Mobil 1, would you folks still justify pouring a
quart
of Mobil 1 in every two weeks? I was tinkering with the idea of going to a
cheaper synthetic blend. I'm glad I do not have this issue with the Corrado
and
the Redline Oil :)
Thanks,
Jim
