As I just hit the 'send' button, I wanted to note that I realize that I still need to remove the lower mounting point to swing the whole carrier/strut assembly out of the way - and then remove the axle from the bearing housing itself. So, I will be still getting my hands dirty...but its better than removing the axles entirely (always a messy job for me, and a PITA).
